The global optical fiber and cable market maintained stable growth in 2011, and the total demand in 2011 rose by 15% year on year to over 200 million core km. In 2012, the demand remained strong, with the growth rate of nearly 6%. In the next five years, the average annual growth rate will be about 3%.

In 2011, the optical network equipment market valued nearly USD16 billion. Network operators increasingly preferred ROADM, coherent optics, packet optical transmission and optical transport network (OTN) equipment; WDM saw the growth of 22% and ROADM 36%. The deployment of 40G/100G accelerated, showing the high-speed development of optical network equipment. Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent still ranked among top two in the market, while ZTE continued to increase its market share.

In 2011, impacted by the de-inventory of downstream manufacturers and the economic downturn, the global optical component market grew by 9% year on year to USD5.8 billion. However, the global optical component price decreased significantly in 2011, partially offset the growth rate of the output value of the industry. The growth rate in 2012 will not exceed 10%.

By region, Latin America and Asia are key growing areas, while Europe, Japan and South Korea witness a drop in demand. China has been the largest driver for the global fiber demand. In?? 2011, the demand in China accounted for about 50% of the global demand; the proportion is expected to be close to 60% in 2012.

The overall performance of China’s optical network reaches the moderate level in the world, and the broadband access penetration rate is 10.94%, ranking 34th. For China, it will take a long time and require sustainable investment to construct the optical fiber network. In a short term, the 3G construction will slow down, and FTTH will replace 3G to become the most important driving force of the demand for optical fiber. Operators will start 4G construction after 2013; 4G network deployment, the integration of radio & television network, telecommunication network and the Internet, as well as the optical fiber upgrading will act as the new impetus which prompts the demand for optical fiber in China.

In China, the construction of optical communication is at its peak. During “Twelfth Five-Year” (2011-2015), the communication investment hits RMB2 trillion, up 36% year on year from RMB1.44 trillion in “Eleventh Five-Year” (2006-2010); 80% of the investment will be used to mobile broadband and fixed broadband, 150% more than 37.5% in “Eleventh Five-Year”.

The gap between Chinese optical communication system equipment manufacturers and foreign equipment manufacturers is gradually narrowed. Huawei and ZTE can compete with Ericsson and Nokia Siemens. Huawei has become one of the world’s top three suppliers of optical transmission equipment. Foreign manufacturers such as Alcatel-Lucent have quitted the Chinese market, whereas Huawei, FiberHome and ZTE occupy more than 80% market share in China.

In the field of optical fiber and cable, the optical fiber perform market involved with the most difficult technical and complicated process is basically monopolized by foreign manufacturers, such as USA Corning, Netherlands Draka, as well as 4 Japanese giants (Shin-Etsu, Sumitomo, Fujikura and Hitachi). Prior to 2010, except Wuhan Yangtze, most of Chinese optical fiber manufacturers were mainly engaged in R & D and production of optical fiber drawing and optical cable. Hengtong Optic-electric, ZTT, FiberHome and Futong Group started independent research and development of optical fiber perform after 2010. In 2012, 5 major optical fiber preform manufacturers are expected to release nearly 500 tons of capacity; meanwhile, the demand for optical fiber preform reaches 4,000 tons, so that the self-sufficiency rate is up to 45%, significantly higher than that in 2011.

The report contains seven chapters and 98 charts. It analyzes background, status quo and competition pattern of Chinese optical communication market, development trends of China optical communication industry, as well as operation and development trends of 18 key enterprises in the industry.

  • India Telecommunications Report Q3 2014
Published: 30-Jul-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 132
BMI View: The Indian telecommunications market has experienced a considerable number of challenges in the last few years due to constant regulatory disputes and a hostile business environment, which includes an aggressive price war that has eroded operators' profitability. Despite the country's significant growth potential, the industry is struggling to capitalise on the opportunities, which will remain the central theme in the near future as we do not expect the market to reach a swift resoluti......
  • Iraq Telecommunications Report Q3 2014
Published: 30-Jul-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 86
BMI View: The Iraqi mobile market recorded strong growth throughout 2013 and Q114, supporting our outlook for continued subscriptions growth over the five years to 2018. We expect strong competition and penetration rising above 100% by 2015 to continue to apply downward pressure on ARPUs, but the government's allocation of 3G licenses in Q214 will help operators offset this trend by tapping into pent up demand for mobile broadband services. We expect the launch of 3G to further stifle growth in ......
  • Netherlands Telecommunications Report Q3 2014
Published: 30-Jul-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 102
BMI View: Despite the lack of subscription growth opportunities, the Netherlands remains a dynamic market with extensive roll-out and uptake of wireless data services. In the wireline segment, the popularity of bundled services in the Netherlands has mitigated the decline in fixed-line subscriptions through fixed-tomobile substitution. Furthermore, the Netherlands' broadband market is one of the most developed in Western Europe in terms of advanced infrastructure deployment and high penetration ......
  • Taiwan Telecommunications Report Q3 2014
Published: 30-Jul-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 93
BMI View: The Taiwanese telecom market is among the most mature in the region, with 126.8% mobile penetration in 2013 and 84.7% of the market is postpaid. Taiwanese mobile market looks to an exciting year ahead in 2014 as six operators have obtained their 4G licences and are expected to introduce 4G services by end-2014. However, operators face short-term ARPU squeeze from the regulators who have imposed compulsory cuts to mobile termination rates and requirements to provide free peering between......
  • Ukraine Telecommunications Report Q3 2014
Published: 30-Jul-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 119
BMI View: The ongoing crisis in Ukraine will likely filter down to the telecoms market as well, after operators reported damaged networks and instances of network blackouts, causing them to temporarily close retail outlets in Kiev. Crimea has been annexed by Russia and there is a risk that the likes of Ukrtelecom may not be able to operate in the region as it reported damage on its network in the region at the beginning of 2014. We have downgraded our broadband and internet forecasts as a result......
  • United Kingdom Telecommunications Report Q3 2014
Published: 30-Jul-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 129
BMI View: The UK telecoms market is mature, with a high penetration of all services, and a roll-out of next generation services including fibre and LTE services is in progress. As a result of its maturity the UK market has diminished opportunities for subscription growth, and operator strategies reflect this by increasingly focusing on value generation from subscriptions. In the mobile market this means operators are focused on rolling out LTE, with three networks operational from the end of Aug......
  • Vietnam Telecommunications Report Q3 2014
Published: 30-Jul-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 111
BMI View: Delays to the launch of 4G mean that, for the short term, operators will concentrate on migrating subscribers to 3G services. The broadband market also shows strong growth, although the geographical challenges of Vietnam's landscape mean there are physical limitations to infrastructure expansion. The fixed-line sector continues to post declines. In 2014, the key development in Vietnamese mobile market is the mobile sector restructuring, such as Viettel's acquisition of EVN Telecom in J......
  • Chad Telecommunications Report 2014
Published: 23-Jul-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 54
BMI View: Chad is one of Africa's most challenging markets for telecommunications investment and development. The wireline sector is a monopoly of the state-owned utility and lacks the resources needed to develop advanced services. The broadband market is served by three alternative players, but these are very small and seemingly target a small group of large enterprises rather than average consumers. The mobile sector, by contrast, is well developed but is led by two major players engaged in a ......
  • Denmark Telecommunications Report Q3 2014
Published: 23-Jul-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 104
BMI View: The Danish telecommunications market is highly mature and increasingly focused around value-added premium services. Most notably, while the broadband market is growing steadily on the back of demand for converged services, the mobile sector is beginning to show signs of fatigue with periodic declines in subscriber numbers linked to the retirement of low-value or inactive accounts. Curiously, adoption of M2M services lags other equally advanced European markets, although growth now seem......
