The global optical fiber and cable market maintained stable growth in 2011, and the total demand in 2011 rose by 15% year on year to over 200 million core km. In 2012, the demand remained strong, with the growth rate of nearly 6%. In the next five years, the average annual growth rate will be about 3%.

In 2011, the optical network equipment market valued nearly USD16 billion. Network operators increasingly preferred ROADM, coherent optics, packet optical transmission and optical transport network (OTN) equipment; WDM saw the growth of 22% and ROADM 36%. The deployment of 40G/100G accelerated, showing the high-speed development of optical network equipment. Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent still ranked among top two in the market, while ZTE continued to increase its market share.

In 2011, impacted by the de-inventory of downstream manufacturers and the economic downturn, the global optical component market grew by 9% year on year to USD5.8 billion. However, the global optical component price decreased significantly in 2011, partially offset the growth rate of the output value of the industry. The growth rate in 2012 will not exceed 10%.

By region, Latin America and Asia are key growing areas, while Europe, Japan and South Korea witness a drop in demand. China has been the largest driver for the global fiber demand. In?? 2011, the demand in China accounted for about 50% of the global demand; the proportion is expected to be close to 60% in 2012.

The overall performance of China’s optical network reaches the moderate level in the world, and the broadband access penetration rate is 10.94%, ranking 34th. For China, it will take a long time and require sustainable investment to construct the optical fiber network. In a short term, the 3G construction will slow down, and FTTH will replace 3G to become the most important driving force of the demand for optical fiber. Operators will start 4G construction after 2013; 4G network deployment, the integration of radio & television network, telecommunication network and the Internet, as well as the optical fiber upgrading will act as the new impetus which prompts the demand for optical fiber in China.

In China, the construction of optical communication is at its peak. During “Twelfth Five-Year” (2011-2015), the communication investment hits RMB2 trillion, up 36% year on year from RMB1.44 trillion in “Eleventh Five-Year” (2006-2010); 80% of the investment will be used to mobile broadband and fixed broadband, 150% more than 37.5% in “Eleventh Five-Year”.

The gap between Chinese optical communication system equipment manufacturers and foreign equipment manufacturers is gradually narrowed. Huawei and ZTE can compete with Ericsson and Nokia Siemens. Huawei has become one of the world’s top three suppliers of optical transmission equipment. Foreign manufacturers such as Alcatel-Lucent have quitted the Chinese market, whereas Huawei, FiberHome and ZTE occupy more than 80% market share in China.

In the field of optical fiber and cable, the optical fiber perform market involved with the most difficult technical and complicated process is basically monopolized by foreign manufacturers, such as USA Corning, Netherlands Draka, as well as 4 Japanese giants (Shin-Etsu, Sumitomo, Fujikura and Hitachi). Prior to 2010, except Wuhan Yangtze, most of Chinese optical fiber manufacturers were mainly engaged in R & D and production of optical fiber drawing and optical cable. Hengtong Optic-electric, ZTT, FiberHome and Futong Group started independent research and development of optical fiber perform after 2010. In 2012, 5 major optical fiber preform manufacturers are expected to release nearly 500 tons of capacity; meanwhile, the demand for optical fiber preform reaches 4,000 tons, so that the self-sufficiency rate is up to 45%, significantly higher than that in 2011.

The report contains seven chapters and 98 charts. It analyzes background, status quo and competition pattern of Chinese optical communication market, development trends of China optical communication industry, as well as operation and development trends of 18 key enterprises in the industry.

  • Vietnam Telecommunications Report Q2 2014
Published: 16-Apr-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 108
BMI View: Since January 2013, we have been using the Vietnam Telecommunications Authority data on the mobile sector. Previously, we made estimates based on figures published by Vietnam's General Statistics Office (GSO) and the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC), which tended to conflict with each other. The figures available do show a general upward trend in Vietnam's mobile market - although the pace of growth has slowed in recent years. Delays to the launch of 4G mean that, for t......
  • Caribbean Telecommunications Report Q2 2014
Published: 16-Apr-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 175
BMI View: We have added two new markets to the Caribbean Telecoms report in Q2 2014, the Cayman Islands and Bermuda. The inclusion of these two allows us to look at the region from a different angle, as both are among the most developed, supported by high GDP per capita, high proportion of postpaid subscribers and strong demand for 3G services. We expect both the Cayman Islands and Bermuda to become the outperformers in the region in terms of mobile data penetration, as centres for financial off......
  • Finland Telecommunications Report Q2 2014
Published: 16-Apr-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 107
BMI View: While many aspects of the Finnish telecoms market appear to have reached saturation, BMI still identifies a number of opportunities for operators in the market. Wireline, in particular, has seen growth slow right down, with 2013 growth of around 3% in broadband subscriptions. Fixed-line telephones continue to rapidly decline, with little hope for a rebound or even a slow down expected in the near term. Growth in the mobile market dipped below 2% in 2013 compared to 2012, reaching penet......
  • Kazakhstan and Central Asia Telecommunications Report Q2 2014
Published: 16-Apr-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 155
BMI View: Our continued scepticism towards the Central Asian telecoms markets continues to play out, with ongoing political risks obscuring the large potential for growth in the region. The US Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are carrying out investigations into the investment activities of TeliaSonera and VimpelCom in Uzbekistan. This follows the Uzbek government's removal of MTS from the market amid claims of bribery and corruption. After a number of......
  • Netherlands Telecommunications Report Q2 2014
Published: 16-Apr-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 95
BMI View: Despite the lack of growth opportunities in terms of subscriptions, the Netherlands remains a dynamic market with extensive roll-out and uptake of wireless data services. In the wireline segment, the popularity of bundled services in the Netherlands has mitigated the decline in fixed-line subscriptions through fixed-to-mobile substitution. Furthermore, the Netherlands' broadband market is one of the most developed in Western Europe in terms of advanced infrastructure deployment and hig......
  • Nigeria Telecommunications Report Q2 2014
Published: 16-Apr-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 113
BMI View: In February 2014, the NCC fined three of the country's four MNOs the sum of NGN647.5mn (US$3.89mn) for missing their QoS targets for the month of January. This development supports BMI's view that increased regulatory pressure over poor QoS would drive capex spending and efficiency improvement strategies among operators in 2014 and beyond. Some operators sealed network and IT outsourcing deals with leading vendors in late 2013 and early 2014. Meanwhile, there are reports of impending t......
  • Saudi Arabia Telecommunications Report Q2 2014
Published: 16-Apr-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 112
BMI View: Saudi Arabia's mobile market had grown beyond maturity as the country's mobile operators continued to build their subscriber bases. The latest data show that this trend is ending and we expect operators to focus their efforts on building revenues from existing subscribers. BMI has observed a number of developments that show operators are keen to build revenues on the back of growing demand for data and content, a strategy we believe will provide long term market value growth. While sub......
  • Singapore Telecommunications Report Q2 2014
Published: 9-Apr-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 101
BMI View: Singapore's telecommunications industry has outperformed many of its regional peers with strong adoption of the latest products and services. Partially due to the country's small landmass and population size, the telecoms market has rapidly grown to a stage where it is approaching saturation. Next generation technologies, mobile and fixed, are therefore the next step in fostering new developments and revenue streams, and industry players - the regulator and operators - have rightly mov......
  • South Korea Telecommunications Report Q2 2014
Published: 9-Apr-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 99
BMI View: South Korea is one of the most advanced markets in the world and is often used as a reference point to determine the direction of other developed markets. The rapid migration of subscribers from 3G to LTE shows the country to be at the forefront of adopting new technologies. There is a dwindling population still using 2G services, but we expect this to end by 2015. This has perhaps caused a slowdown of fixed broadband connections, while growth in VoIP is mitigating the loss of PTSN fix......
