Brazil Agribusiness Report Q2 2013

Publisher Name :
Date: 20-Mar-2013
No. of pages: 130

BMI View: Overall, we see the most potential for growth for the soybean, livestock and coffee industry over the medium term. This is because of a shift in food consumption growth towards Asia for these items, while traditional buyers'' demand will experience only subdued growth. We are positive about the sugar cane sector as a whole, as we see strong sugar cane production growth over the rest of our forecast period. This growth will benefit the ethanol industry first as ethanol economics are now favourable to biofuels production at the expense of sugar. In the short-term, we flag risks that the current record grain harvest will encounter problems at the export stage because of current queues at the country''s major ports and upcoming strikes. Among Brazilian agribusiness companies, we favour São Martinho because it is the largest player in the sector and the most likely to benefit from industry developments.

Key Forecasts

  • Sugar production growth to 2016/17: 16.8% to 43.1mn tonnes. Because replanting has been slower than initially expected, we project average growth over our forecast period. There are upside risks to our view.

  • Coffee consumption growth to 2016/17: 11.5% to 22.3mn bags. Coffee consumers in emerging markets that do not have a strong coffee culture are often very price-sensitive, which will drive demand for the cheaper robusta given its lower production costs.

  • Brazil Agribusiness Report Q4 2016
Published: 28-Sep-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 88
BMI View: We believe that grains production growth over the next five years will slow relative to the preceding five. Soybean production will outpace that of corn, as lower production costs for soybean relative to corn will make the commodity more attractive to grow. However, we see comparatively limited growth out to 2019/20 given the scarcity of area available for expansion, as well as high import costs for fertilisers. We hold a more positive view on the sugar industry......
  • Cameroon Agribusiness Report Q4 2016
Published: 28-Sep-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 67
BMI View: We have not made significant revisions to our forecast outlook in this Q4 2016 quarterly update. We hold the view that cocoa remains Cameroon's most important cash crop. We hold a positive view on the country's cocoa production as it has ample room for growth and an increasingly stable access to export markets. Over the remainder of our forecast period to 2019/20, we believe improved production techniques will give cocoa farmers new opportunities to sell greater......
  • Colombia Agribusiness Report Q4 2016
Published: 28-Sep-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 90
BMI View: Colombia's agribusiness sector is being held back by a number of deep structural challenges including the lingering consequences of internal armed conflict, structural inefficiencies, low competitiveness and poor policy choices. As a result, area cultivated and yields have stagnated over the past decade. However, after several decades of disappointing growth in Colombia's agribusiness sector, the outlook for production and exports is brightening. The efforts mad......
  • Malaysia Agribusiness Report Q4 2016
Published: 28-Sep-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 79
BMI View: Malaysia's agribusiness sector is experiencing challenging times, as palm oil industry - its most emblematic sector - is undermined by low prices and growing structural challenges. The cocoa sector is in an even worse position, suffering a severe decline after the stellar performance of the 1990s. The cocoa processing sector faces increasing competition from Indonesia and is losing market share at a fast pace. The medium-term outlook is brighter, amid strong gro......
  • Morocco Agribusiness Report Q4 2016
Published: 28-Sep-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 68
BMI View: In the short term, we expect the severe drought afflicting the country in 2016 to reduce output dramatically for the grains and sugar sub-sectors. Meanwhile, dairy and beef production growth will also slow down. However, we expect this to be a temporary setback and all areas of Morocco's agriculture sector are set to enjoy moderate to strong growth from 2017 to the end of our forecast period. Our optimism is bolstered by the government-initiated Green Morocco Pl......
  • Peru Agribusiness Report Q4 2016
Published: 28-Sep-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 74
BMI View: We continue to maintain a generally positive outlook for the Peruvian agricultural sector. We have modestly revised our forecasts for several segments of the Peruvian agricultural sector in our Q4 2016 update though continue to maintain a positive outlook for the agricultural sector as a whole. Export crops such as coffee and cocoa are hampered by infrastructure constraints and a lack of investment; however, as Peru develops and gains recognition for organic and......
  • Venezuela Agribusiness Report Q4 2016
Published: 28-Sep-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 68
BMI View: The operating environment for Venezuela's agribusiness sector has deteriorated significantly over recent years due to the poor macroeconomic climate, a shortage of foreign currency for input purchases and general government mismanagement. Venezuela's economy will continue to be under extreme downward pressure in 2016 amid low international oil prices. The growing headwinds to the economy will weigh on agricultural production and consumption in the coming years, ......
  • Vietnam Agribusiness Report Q4 2016
Published: 28-Sep-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 90
BMI View: Recent developments in Vietnam's economic and business environments add further weight to our positive view on its agribusiness sector. The industry holds strong growth opportunities in terms of production, exports and retail sales, particularly with regard to the rice, coffee, livestock and dairy sectors. Moreover, economic and financial integration in South East Asia will benefit Vietnam's exports of rice, dairy and coffee. However, Vietnam faces growing compe......
  • Iran Agribusiness Report Q4 2016
Published: 21-Sep-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 43
BMI View: The removal of almost all sanctions on Iran's economy heralds a new era for the country. In terms of agriculture, the return of economic growth will have the most rapid and direct impact on consumption. Production and investment in the supply chain will also benefit, but over the longer term. Therefore, production expansion will be slower than consumption growth in the coming years and Iran will remain a large and growing importer of key commodities. The lifting......
