Global demand to rise 7.7% annually through 2019

Global demand for primary and secondary batteries is forecast to rise 7.7 percent per year to $120 billion in 2019. Rapidly expanding production of hybrid and electric vehicles (H/EVs), particularly in Western Europe and the US, will fuel purchases of high-cost batteries used to power such vehicles. In developing regions, improving levels of disposable income and consumer spending will support sales of high-drain electronics (e.g., cell phones, personal computers), boosting demand for both primary and secondary replacement batteries. A shift to better performing primary batteries (including alkaline and lithium types) as incomes rise is also expected to drive market advances in the developing world. In the industrial battery market, expanding investment in energy storage systems to provide backup power and/or frequency regulation will spur sales.

China, India to post strongest performance

China will remain the largest national market for batteries through 2019. Rising output from the country’s massive manufacturing sector -- particularly in the motor vehicle and electrical and electronic product industries -- will support double-digit yearly advances in the local battery market. Investments to expand electrical generation capacity will bolster demand for batteries used in energy storage applications. India is also forecast to post double-digit annual gains in battery sales through 2019, driven by rising personal incomes that will increase the affordability of battery-consuming products such as consumer electronics and automobiles.

North America and Western Europe are projected to see strong increases in battery demand through 2019, driven largely by expansion in their automotive markets as production and sales of H/EVs soar (partly a consequence of falling lithium-ion battery prices and increased affordability of H/EVs). Countries in these regions will also see growing demand for battery-based systems that store energy and regulate power frequencies, particularly as these regions increasingly integrate wind and solar facilities with national electrical grids. In the US especially, suppliers of advanced industrial batteries are benefiting from increased installation of microgrids and off-grid renewable energy systems.

Secondary batteries to outpace primary types

The market for secondary batteries is expected to rise at a faster rate than sales of primary batteries. The popularity of portable electronics has grown rapidly, expanding the share of the market held by secondary battery suppliers. Rising output of H/EVs, as well as growing numbers of motor vehicles in use in developing countries, will also benefit suppliers, boosting demand for both OEM and aftermarket batteries. Lithiumion secondary batteries are forecast to register the strongest annual gains through 2019, boosted by their expanding use in electronics and H/EVs. World demand for primary batteries is expected to rise at a more moderate pace. Growth will be limited by the ongoing adoption of secondary batteries in electronics applications, where these products are increasingly preferred, especially as recharge times drop. However, increased penetration of higher priced alkaline and lithium primary batteries will prevent slower advances, as these products continue to take share from lower cost zinc-carbon types.

Additional Information

This study analyzes global supply of and demand for primary and secondary batteries. Primary batteries (nonrechargeable energy storage devices which must be discarded after discharge) include alkaline, zinc-carbon, lithium, and other (silver-oxide, zinc-air, specialty, etc.) types. Markets for primary batteries include consumer, industrial, and other (including government) applications. Types of secondary (rechargeable or storage) batteries are leadacid, lithium-ion (including lithium-polymer), nickel-based (nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride), and other (including specialty) secondary cells. Secondary battery markets include automotive (both starting/lighting/ignition and hybrid and electric vehicle batteries), consumer, and industrial and other (including government) applications.

Historical data for 2004, 2009, and 2014 and forecasts for 2019 and 2024 are provided for demand, net exports, and shipments of primary and secondary batteries at the aggregate level on a country-by-country basis, valued in millions of current US dollars, including inflation. Data on primary and secondary battery demand by major market and by product type are also provided in millions of current US dollars. The term “demand” actually refers to “apparent consumption” and is defined as shipments (also referred to as “production,” “output,” or “supply”) from a nation’s indigenous battery manufacturing facilities plus imports minus exports. “Demand” is used interchangeably with the terms “market,” “sales,” and “consumption.” The terms “battery” and “cell” are used interchangeably as well, each referring to both single-cell (AA batteries, for instance) and multi-cell (such as 9-volt batteries) units. The value added from battery pack manufacture is not included in sales totals.
