Petrochemicals are chemical merchandise derived from petroleum. Some chemical compounds constructed from petroleum are also obtained from other fossil fuels, similar to coal or pure fuel, or renewable sources resembling corn or sugar cane.

There is substantial inter-regional petrochemical trade. The prefix "petro-" is an arbitrary abbreviation of the word "petroleum"; since "petro-" is Historic Greek for "rock" and "oleum" means "oil".
