US demand to rise 7% annually through 2019

US demand for insulation is forecast to rise 7.0 percent annually through 2019 to $10.4 billion in 2019. Resurgent building construction activity will boost insulation demand, aided by the adoption of more stringent building codes such as the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), which will encourage more insulation use per structure. Efforts to make existing buildings more energy efficient will support improvement and replacement demand for insulation.

Residential market to be fastest growing

The residential market is expected to post the most rapid gains through 2019 based on double-digit annual growth in housing starts. While the bulk of incremental insulation demand will be due to the increased number of new dwellings, additional gains will arise from the installation of more new insulation per structure as more areas of the US begin to comply with the 2012 IECC. Residential insulation demand will also be supported by efforts to upgrade insulation in existing houses, as homeowners seek to reduce utility bills by retrofitting the insulation in their attics and walls in order to increase energy efficiency.

Nonresidential market to recover from recent declines

Through 2019, insulation demand in the nonresidential market is expected to recover from the declines posted between 2009 and 2014, spurred by a rebound in nonresidential building construction expenditures, particularly in the office and commercial segments. Increased interest in green building practices, such as those outlined by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, will boost demand for more insulation with higher R-values.

Fiberglass insulation to remain largest segment

Fiberglass insulation accounted for the largest share of insulation demand in 2014 with 48 percent of the market by value. Through 2019, fiberglass will remain the market leader, with demand reaching $5.0 billion. Double-digit annual growth in building construction expenditures will drive gains. Fiberglass insulation remains a popular choice with construction professionals and DIYers because of its low cost, favorable insu-lative properties, and ease of installation.

Foamed plastic insulation to benefit from new standards

Demand for foamed plastic insulation, which made up the second largest share of the market in 2014, is forecast to grow to $4.6 billion by 2019. Foamed plastics have historically been used more extensively in the nonresidential market, as their high R-value makes them desirable to many builders and designers. However, code changes that call for houses to be better sealed to prevent air leaks -- a major focus of the 2012 IECC -- will boost demand for foamed plastic insulation despite its higher cost, as it is well suited for sealing between walls and in hard-to-reach-areas, such as crawl spaces.

Additional Information

This comprehensive study examines the US insulation industry by product, market, and region. Insulation materials covered by the study include fiberglass, foamed plastics (e.g., rigid urethanes and polystyrenes), reflective insulation and radiant barriers, mineral wool, cellulose, and other insulation materials (e.g., perlite, vermiculite, and foamed glass).

Historical data are provided for 2004, 2009, and 2014 with forecasts for the years 2019 and 2024. Data are presented in millions of US dollars, millions of pounds, and billions of square feet of R-1 value. “Demand” is defined as production plus imports minus exports, and is synonymous with terms such as “sales” and “consumption.” Demand by weight is analyzed by product form (e.g., blankets, boards, and loose fill) for each material. Demand in end-use markets (residential and nonresidential construction, industrial and HVAC equipment, and other) is examined by units of insulating value (square feet of R-1 value). For the purposes of this study, insulation products that are incorporated into other building products (e.g., insulated vinyl siding, insulated metal doors) are counted in the market in which the building product is used.
