Introduction:
In 2016, the glut became more severe in Chinese LNG industry. The conventional LNG plants faced losses, and some plants entered long-term shutdowns. The global LNG spot price was low, thus its market share in coastal regions had increased. The government was loosening the natural gas import policy, so the spot LNG import market was in good condition. In 2016, the LNG market price reached a new low and stayed at low, and its price was quite competitive against the pipeline gas price. The industrial-use LNG market developed rapidly in 2016, and improved the downstream consumption growth. This report provides a clear vision in the market trends, market situation and operating strategy to help LNG market investors to find the best investing opportunities. It can also be an accurate and scientific decision basis for business leaders in strategic planning and decision making process. It's also a valuable reference for banks' credit department.
Up till the end of 2016, the capacity of Chinese LNG plants in operation reached 96.95 million m³/d. Pipeline gas liquefaction plants obviously slowed down production, and coke oven gas-to-LNG projects took the majority in newly-added projects. The 3,000kt/a receiving terminal at Beihai, Guangxi was put into operation, and the LNG receiving terminal capacity was increased to 46,800kt/a. According to SCI data, the total supply volume of Chinese-made LNG reached 8,220kt in 2016, and import volume was 26,150kt, among which the supply volume in the form of LNG was 5,530kt. The total supply volume in LNG market was 13,750kt. As for the downstream consumption structure, the industrial LNG consumption volume saw explosive growth in 2016. The industrial LNG consumption volume in 2016 reached 6,500kt, rising 6% to 47% in the total China's LNG consumption, supported by the policy of changing fuel from coal to natural gas and the lower LNG price. Residential LNG consumption volume increased to 2,540kt, taking up a proportion of 19% of the total.
