World demand to grow more than 5% annually through 2019
Worldwide demand for cups and lids will increase more than five percent per year through 2019. Foodservice and food pro-cessing account for more than 90 percent of overall demand. North America domi-nates the market due to the diverse uses of disposables in the region. In foodservice, demand will be driven primarily by the quick serve restaurant (QSR) segment, which accounts for the largest share of demand. The US is the largest market for disposable foodservice cups, as most fast food establishments in the country serve all beverages in disposable cups for take-out and dine-in customers alike. Outside of North America, demand has been limited by the fact that in many regions beverages are served in disposable cups only for take-out patrons. In developing countries, demand has been held down by the popularity of street food vendors, which typically only offer packaged beverages.
Single-serve cups & lids to drive growth in food processing market
In the food processing market, advances for cups and lids will result from the in-creased popularity of single-serve entrees and soups. At present, such products are far more popular in the US based on the variety of foods packaged in this format including prepared meals, soups, cereal, pasta and baby food. In Canada and the US, single-cup coffee brewing machines have created remarkable growth for the small cups that fit these appliances (although sales growth is slowing and environmental concerns and higher costs may impede broad adoption in other regions). Outside of North America, yogurt is a key market in Europe and instant noodles are important in Asia. Outside of these key exceptions, cups are not widely used. However, going forward growing personal incomes and increasing consumption of processed foods are expected to boost growth in developing nations, especially Asia. Additionally, overall food and beverage processing activity is growing at a faster pace than in more established markets in North America, Western Europe, and Japan -- and many of these countries are more receptive to cups and other single-serve packaging formats than is the case in Europe.
Developing areas to see fastest growing demand
Going forward overall growth for cups and lids will be fastest in developing markets such as China, India, Indonesia, Russia, and Brazil. In these countries, Western-style chain restaurants are expanding, and these restaurants tend to be more frequent users of disposable cups and lids. In addition, as disposable in-comes grow consumers will be able to spend more on indulgences like frozen yogurt and specialty coffee. However, while growth for cups and lids will be fast in most developing countries, mar-kets outside of Asia will remain small due to lower restaurant patronage rates.
In more advanced economies, demand will remain fairly high but will grow at a slower rate. In Western Europe, usage of disposable cups in foodservice is less common, due to environmental considerations as well as the greater tendency to eat in restaurants, even in QSRs. Additionally, the share of “to go” orders at QSR restaurants in Europe is usually much smaller than in North America.

Additional Information
This study analyzes the global cup and lid industry. Product segments covered include cups (e.g., drinking cups, packaging cups, portion cups, and food cups) and lids (e.g., drinking cup lids and flexible lids) made of plastic, paper, foil, and other materials. Markets for these products include food and beverage packaging; foodservice establishments (e.g., quick service restaurants, coffee and snack shops, and other establishments); and retail and other (e.g., medical and dental). Packaging cups are defined as small plastic or paper containers (holding approximately 250 milliliters or less) that can be easily held in one’s hand and typically contain a single serving of product. Food cups include disposable cups with shorter walls than drinking cups, in sizes of approximately 350 milliliters or less for such applications as holding ice cream, side dishes, soup, and chili. Excluded are reusable drinking cups and packaging tubs containing more than one serving.
Historical data (2004, 2009, and 2014) and forecasts for 2019 and 2024 are presented for cup and lid demand by product, material, market, geographic region, and major country in current US dollars (i.e., including inflation). The terms “market,” “sales,” “consumption,” and “demand” refer to apparent consumption and are defined as shipments (also referred to variously as “production,” “output,” or “supply”) from a country’s domestic manufacturing facilities, plus imports, minus exports. Tabular details may not add to totals due to independent rounding, and some ratios are based on unrounded numbers. Throughout the study, demand for cups and lids is related to various indicators for comparative purposes and to facilitate further analysis.
