The US agricultural sector will be happy to see the end of the 2012 calendar year: The combined production growth of the country’s major grains and animal products is expected to be the worst in two decades. We are somewhat optimistic for the 2013 season, as we anticipate a strong rebound in corn and soybean production. We also forecast growth in the poultry sector due to moderating corn prices. We are particularly bullish cotton due to a higher area planted. We expect the beef sector to be the laggard in the livestock complex, and see strong downside risks to the 2013/14 US wheat crop. Given that we forecast generally stable consumption growth, we expect the US to remain the world’s largest food exporter over the coming years.

Key Trends

  • Soybean production growth to 2016/17:

27.4% to 105.7mn tonnes. This is mainly owing to the increase in poultry production over the long term. This will create production incentives by driving demand for soybean, which is used as feed. Furthermore, livestock production is still expanding globally, driving feed export demand.

  • Corn consumption growth to 2017:

6.9% to 298.7mn tonnes. This will be driven by increases in ethanol production – though this growth will be less steep than in the past few years – and an increase in feed use in the later years of our forecast period as the livestock sector picks up. Base effects are a key factor why the growth rate is not higher.

  • Poultry production growth to 2016/17:

20.1% to 23.1mn tonnes. The US is the world’s second largest poultry exporter behind Brazil. As such, increased global demand for poultry, particularly from emerging markets, is likely to serve as a powerful production incentive.

  • 2013 real GDP growth:

    2.1% year-on-year (y-o-y), down from 2.3% in 2012; predicted to average 2.2% from 2012 until 2017.

  • Consumer price inflation:

    2.2% ave in 2013, up from 1.8% in 2012.

Industry Outlook

We see potential for the 2012 US Farm Bill to be extended for several months, which has occurred with previous bills, but see little chance that the bill will expire outright. Food stamps were the largest single part of the 2008 farm bill, and this would continue if the current bill is implemented. When the 2008 bill was passed in June of that year, food stamps comprised two-thirds of the projected total five-year net outlay (US$284bn). If the current bill were extended, the US Congressional Budget Office forecasts that food stamps would comprise 78% of all spending (US$772bn) over 10 years. We will be watching the fortunes of the 2013/14 US wheat crop in the coming weeks, as soil conditions remained the poorest in almost 30 years as of early December 2012. As of late November, almost a quarter of all soil was rated in either ‘poor’ or ‘very poor’ condition. There is not a direct correlation between early-season soil conditions and harvest totals, but given that the US is the world’s largest wheat exporter, changes in US supply represent upside risks to prices in 2013, even though the global wheat market is one of the world’s most diversified. We continue to forecast a slight decrease in US wheat output to 58.5mn tonnes in 2013/14 as supply reverts to historical averages. We continue to forecast lower US beef production and consumption in 2013, as poor pasture conditions and high grain prices lead to record low cattle inventories. Feedlot operators have been particularly squeezed by the recent spike in grain prices and volatility in feeder cattle prices. The low inventories, in turn, have caused wholesale and retail beef prices to rise, leading to reduced consumption at a time when beef demand is slowing amid increasing health consciousness. We expect major beef producers in the US to continue underperforming the S&P500 over the next few months. We continue to expect lower beef production and consumption in the US in 2012/13, with beef production being constrained by cattle inventories that are at their lowest levels since 1960..

  • Spain Agribusiness Report Q2 2014
Published: 9-Apr-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 114
BMI View: Plentiful supplies of corn and barley will hold down feed prices in 2014, with positive implications for meat and dairy producers. Pork and poultry output and consumption will continue to outperform beef, with cattle herds diminished after years of falling demand. The restructuring of CAP payments may provide some succour for beef producers, but recovery, if it comes, will likely be a long way off. Milk prices are expected to continue their recovery from the crisis levels of early 2013......
  • United States Agribusiness Report Q2 2014
Published: 9-Apr-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 155
BMI View: The US agriculture sector is unlikely to repeat the performance of 2013, a record year for production and incomes. Grain production overall is expected to be lower due to a smaller area planted and there are now concerns over soil quality in wheat-growing areas. However, the grains sector looks relatively positive compared with livestock, where production growth will be minimal in 2014. The pork sector is facing significant disease concerns from PEDv, while beef production will fall du......
  • Tanzania Agribusiness Report Q2 2014
Published: 9-Apr-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 101
BMI View: We continue to favour the Tanzanian sugar and coffee industries over the medium term owing to their potential for growth on the back of strong investment in capacity. The grain industry in Tanzania will remain less competitive than in other countries in the region, particularly South Africa and Zambia, and we see little potential for the country to become a major grain exporter. Key Forecasts ? Sugar production growth to 2017/18: 39.2% to 424,500 tonnes. This will come from increased i......
  • Peru Agribusiness Report Q2 2014
Published: 2-Apr-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 110
BMI View: Our outlook for Peru's agricultural sector remains positive. The livestock sector is very dynamic, and investment into the country's ethanol sector is boosting sugar production. Export crops such as coffee and cocoa are hampered by a lack of infrastructure and investment, but there is scope for strong growth in both, particularly as Peru is becoming increasingly recognised for organic and speciality crops. We caution that a lack of profitability threatens to weaken the dairy sector; th......
  • Venezuela Agribusiness Report Q2 2014
Published: 2-Apr-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 97
BMI View: The victory of Nicolás Maduro of the ruling Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela in April will most probably ensure the continuity of many of the interventionist policies of Chávez's era. Price fixing in particular continues to be a source of woe for producers unable to meet input costs, which are soaring in line with some of the highest rates of inflation in the world. Some respite has arrived in the form of a 20% rise in the government-fixed price of food items including beef, chi......
  • Canada Agribusiness Report Q2 2014
Published: 2-Apr-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 107
BMI View: Canada's position in the global grain market was reinforced in 2012/13 owing to better-thanexpected wheat and corn production and in a context of tight supply from other major producers. For 2013/14, the country's position has been stronger at the start of the season, when it was competing with the US and Europe, but has lost strength, as it is now competing with eastern Europe. We believe the Canadian beef and pork industries will gain the most from having signed the EU-Canada Free Tr......
  • Germany Agribusiness Report Q2 2014
Published: 2-Apr-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 124
BMI View: Pork producers will face rising costs due to the staggered implementation of minimum wage legislation beginning later this year, while beef production is expected to show weak growth as dairy herds recover. Dairy farmers are still faced with a difficult climate, with many smaller producers expected to be faced with a choice of ceasing operations or joining cooperatives after the removal of quotas in 2015. Even for the big players, milk prices remain perilously low, and it is only the s......
  • Mozambique Agribusiness Report Q2 2014
Published: 2-Apr-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 94
BMI View: We hold a positive view on the agribusiness sector of Mozambique, as the country is able to tap into abundant and largely unexploited land and water resources. Of the utmost importance is boosting agricultural productivity by improving irrigation, and introducing technology to small-scale farmers. The government has also highlighted the need to improve food and nutritional safety and to facilitate more agricultural reform. Our optimism about Mozambique's agriculture industry largely hi......
  • Argentina Agribusiness Report Q2 2014
Published: 26-Mar-2014        Price: US $1295 Onwards        Pages: 118
BMI View: With an election on the horizon and a deteriorating economic environment, the Argentine grain sector will continued play centre stage over the medium term. With foreign reserves under pressure, grain exports (particularly soybean) will remain vital, but there is increasing evidence of hoarding, which could lead to clashes with the government over policy. Nonetheless, soybean will remain the pre-eminent crop in Argentina over the long term, and we expect the poultry production to show t......
