Publisher Name :
Date: 26-Jun-2013
No. of pages: 75

Since the last quarterly report, South Africa's Department of Tourism has released final tourist arrivals

figures for 2012. These showed overseas (i.e. non-African) arrivals growth of 15.1%, to reach 2,505,762.

Including African arrivals, total arrivals stood at 9,188,368, up by 10.2% y-o-y.

These strong arrivals figures bear out BMI's continued optimism towards the South African tourism sector

at present. Our forecasts currently call for 9% growth in arrivals over 2013, and a further 36% increase in

arrivals over the 2013-17 period, to reach almost 13.3mn total arrivals.

BMI View: Strong growth in major source markets has bolstered the tourism sector in 2016 following an outbreak of the MERS virus in 2015, which headlined a disappointing year overall. South Korea's government has been a strong supporter of the industry, and although there has not been major investment of international groups into the country, the selection of Pyeongchang as host city for the 2018 Winter Olympics has helped drive foreign direct investment into the country.......

BMI View: Falling arrivals from China have taken the edge off the strong growth previously forecast for Taiwan's tourism industry; however, the outlook for the market remains broadly positive. Arrivals from alternative regional markets such as Japan and South Korea, as well as those further afield in Europe and North America, continue to grow and expansion is being supported by further investment in transport infrastructure and widespread marketing campaigns. As such, the......

BMI View: Tanzania's tourism market offers significant growth potential, with the country further developing its reputation as a popular safari destination. Investment by the government in infrastructure is expected to help to support industry growth, while arrivals are set to steadily increase over our five-year forecast period. We do, however, note that some downside risks are present due to the introduction of VAT on all tourism services, which risks reducing arrivals ......

BMI View: Uganda's tourism market offers significant growth potential. The Ugandan government is taking significant steps to promote the industry, particularly to local travellers. Arrivals are set to increase steadily over our five-year forecast period to 2020. However, we do forecast a decrease in tourism-related receipts due to increasing arrivals from poorer source markets, with visitors unlikely to spend as much as visitors from more affluent regions. Key Updat......

BMI View: We maintain a broadly positive outlook for India's growing tourism industry. While the market has not yet developed to rival other regional destinations such as Thailand and Malaysia in terms of international arrivals, the inbound travel market is growing and India also presents an enormous domestic tourism market. With inbound and domestic travel growing steadily, we observe growing investor interest in India's hotel market. A number of leading global hotel gro......
