BMI View: Although the completion of the Panama Canal expansion in 2016 will result in a slowdown in
both economic growth and the transport of related capital goods, we retain a positive view on Panamanian
trade. Despite the Canal's completion there is still a large project pipeline, the completion of the
enlargement of the canal's locks will help Panama maintain its position as a major global transport hub
over the long term, and a strong outlook for the Panamanian consumer will help ensure domestic demand
for containerised consumer goods.
Although growth in road haulage volumes will slow in 2016, it will nevertheless remain robust both in the
short term and over the course of our medium-term forecast period to 2020. Strong consumer demand will
help offset the loss of canal-related project cargos.
