US demand to grow 2.2% annually through 2019

US demand for janitorial equipment and supplies is forecast to grow 2.2 percent per year through 2019 to $7.1 billion, continuing the recovery that began in the latter part of the 2009-2014 period. Significant pent-up demand in automated floor cleaning equipment will fortify advances. After initially falling in 2008 and 2009, sales of most types of automated floor cleaning equipment remained below pre-recession highs as of 2014, but will again approach or exceed those levels by 2019.

Gains will be spurred by accelerating economic growth, which will increase foot traffic and a need for additional cleaning in buildings, as well as factors such as a rising number of business establishments and gains in nonresidential floor space that boost the potential market for janitorial products. Increased demand for nonessential cleaning activity and related products will also promote advances. Heightened interest in sustainable cleaning practices will buoy demand for higher value products that decrease or eliminate water or chemical consumption. Sales will be further fueled by growing interest in replacing older, noisy equipment with quieter, more discreet products appropriate for noise-sensitive environments. In addition, concerns about the risk of cross-contamination and employee injury will drive sales of products with advanced features and improved ergonomic design. Automated floor cleaning equipment to grow fastest

Among markets, institutional and office buildings will record the fastest gains through 2019. The institutional market will be driven by above average growth in floor space and in the number of healthcare and related establishments. The elevated sanitary standards and concern about disease prevention in these establishments will further support demand for higher-value products. The office building market will primarily be fortified by ongoing changes in cleanliness standards, trends toward daytime cleaning, and rebounding demand for automated floor cleaners.

Contract cleaner demand to outpace in-house market

As businesses continue to rebound from the 2007-2009 recession, they will increasingly turn to contract cleaners in an effort to reduce overhead costs associated with building maintenance. In fact, growth in contract cleaner demand for janitorial equipment and supplies will slightly edge demand gains for in-house staff in all market categories through 2019. Excluded from the scope of the study are all chemical cleaning products, including compounds and solutions, as well as the household-grade equivalents of cleaning supplies. However, household-grade vacuums purchased and used in the commercial environment are included in the study.
