BMI View: Leading operator MTN Ghana launched 4G services in June 2016, following its licence and

spectrum acquisition in December 2015. The operator has built infrastructure in Ghana's regional capitals

and is currently swapping SIM cards to get customers ready for the launch. We expect the operator to

concurrently develop its VAS offerings to monetise the advantage of having the country's only 4G voice

licence. Although, we maintain the view that monetisation of this network will occur in the long-term as the

majority of consumers will still opt for more affordable 3G services.

Latest Updates & Industry Developments

? The Ghanaian mobile market grew to 36.1mn subscriptions in Q116, according to the regulator. The

penetration rate reached 131.3% and MTN commanded a market share of 47.1%.

? The mobile data market for mobile phones grew to 18.8mn in Q116, which translates to a penetration rate

of 68.2%, according to the regulator. In comparison, 101,851 subscribers used broadband wireless access,

which provides fixed access points over 4G technology. Approximately 75,000 customers had wireline

broadband subscriptions.

"It is imperative to design an architecture that breaks down system silos and allows information to flow freely between disparate systems to enable CSPs' digital transformations." Almost all communications service providers (CSPs) worldwide are planning or progressing towards their transformations into digital service providers (DSPs), and all their transformation efforts have one factor in common – the challenge posed by existing siloed platforms. A &ls......

  • Japan Telecommunications Report Q1 2017
Published: 30-Nov-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 67
BMI View: We have made minor forecast adjustments to account for the latest data for the period up to September 2016 but our core outlook for the Japanese mobile market remains unchanged in our Q1 2017 report update. Japan's mature telecommunications industry is characterised by high-speed internet connections. Operators have enjoyed success in pursuing multi-device strategies due to a high appetite for advanced technology and digital applications. However, the country's ......
  • Rwanda Telecommunications Report Q1 2017
Published: 30-Nov-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 66
BMI View: We have made some modest forecast revisions to account for the latest data from H116 but our crucial outlook remains unchanged. BMI holds the opinion that Rwanda has a competitive mobile telephony market with three network operators MTN, Tigo and Airtel helping to drive subscriber growth. In addition, growing demand for data services and the availability of new low-cost internet-enabled devices should positively impact on 3G and 4G subscriber uptake, as well as ......
  • Uganda Telecommunications Report Q1 2017
Published: 30-Nov-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 59
BMI View: We hold our positive view for the Ugandan mobile market in Q117 quartly report update, based on the faster tha expected growth in the first half of 2016, following losses due to the mandatory SIM registrations in H215. Mobile market growth will be supported by low penetration rates currently around 56. Although, operators continue to make investments in advanced data networks, MFS is likely to remain the primary key VAS in the mobile market as traction in the ta......
  • Argentina Telecommunications Report Q1 2017
Published: 30-Nov-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 65
BMI View: We have made some minor forecast revisions but our outlook remains largely unchanged in the Q117 report update. The mobile market is nearing saturation and organic growth prospects will be diminished going forward. Nevertheless, the new regulator is taking an investor-friendly approach to market development, although further reforms are still needed. Mobile subscription growth has stalled and the ability for operators to embrace converged services could not come......
  • Congo-Brazzaville, Congo, Dem Rep and Burundi Telecommunications Report Q1 2017
Published: 30-Nov-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 101
BMI View: SIM registration implemented at the end of 2015 has severely affected subscriber numbers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as 9.2mn SIMs were deactivated over the last three quarters. Still, the market is underserved and holds potential for growth. We believe that limited subscriber uptake in rural areas of Congo-Brazzaville means that subscription growth will tick modestly upwards for the duration of our forecast period to 2020. Burundi's mobile market is......
  • Europe Telecommunications Report Q1 2017
Published: 30-Nov-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 43
BMI View: Despite differences between the more developed Western European markets and the emerging markets of Central and Eastern Europe, the overall strategies of the various operators in the region remain the same, albeit at different stages. As the potential for organic growth is limited, operators aim to migrate customers to more advanced plans and upsell new services as part of a convergent strategy. Competition will focus on services rather than networks, but these ......
  • India Telecommunications Report Q1 2017
Published: 30-Nov-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 81
BMI View: The disconnection between the Indian government, regulators and operators is more apparent than ever following the latest spectrum auction. Extremely high reserve prices deterred bidders already being undermined by price competition, a situation exacerbated by Reliance Jio's launch of ultra low-cost 4G services. Meanwhile sluggish expansion of wireline broadband is linked to the stalled momentum of state-owned players. The best investment opportunities therefore......
