Cote d`Ivoire Telecommunications Report Q4 2016

Publisher Name :
Date: 14-Sep-2016
No. of pages: 56

BMI View: We maintain our view that the telecommunications market in Côte d'Ivoire is in a state of flux,

with the recent consolidation and new technologies on the horizon. New LTE licenses have been awarded

and the government's consolidation through the revocation of the licences of the smaller players

leaves market leaders Orange, MTN and Maroc Telecom free to create a more rational competitive

landscape. The strong macroeconomic outlook, as well as demand for advanced services such as mobile

money, makes the country a bright spot in the region for telecoms operators.

Latest Updates & Industry Developments

? There were 25.043mn mobile subscribers in Côte d'Ivoire at the end of Q116, for a penetration rate of

111.3%.

? The regulator reported a q-o-q decline of 28.9% in mobile money subscribers with the market ending

Q116 with 6mn subscribers.

BMI View: With the deal between Telenet and BASE closed, the three main operators in Belgium are all fully convergent. This means a focus on advanced services, such as postpaid, LTE and bundling, with a strategy looking to upsell customers and retain them onto their networks. Opportunities still exist as many users are still on basic services, but work remains to be done to ensure competition, especially in the fixed market, where regulation remains weak, with the additio......

BMI View: We have made some forecast revisions to Myanmar this quarter as the growth in H116 outpaced our initial expectations. Furthermore, Viettel has reportedly been chosen by the government as the foreign partner for Myanmar's fourth and final mobile operator, to be licensed by end-2016. Through a joint venture model, Viettel can replicate its tried-and-tested developing market strategy. However, the new operator's challenges include the slowing organic mobile subscri......
  • Canada Telecommunications Report Q4 2016

BMI View: The big three continue to dominate the Canadian telecoms market, as efforts to create more competition have yet to fully bear fruit. However, the market has evolved, with demand for more advanced services driving the rollout of LTE and fibre services, even if those are concentrated in profitable urban areas. OTT players have also had an impact in making the pay-TV market more flexible, an area where regulators have also intervened. Latest Updates & Industr......
  • Denmark Telecommunications Report Q4 2016

BMI View: Telenor Denmark stopped selling prepaid services on March 31 2016, to focus exclusively on its post-paid services. We believe Telenor's decision to withdraw prepaid services in Denmark is mostly domestic, as it looks to reduce its exposure in the market and improve profitability following the failure of its merger with Telia. However, it also highlights the broader issue of how operators are attempting to maintain their direct relationship with consumers in satu......

Published: 28-Sep-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 39
BMI View: The phasing out of regional macroeconomic headwinds will provide better prospects for service usage, uptake and monetisation. As most mobile voice markets are now saturated, non-legacy services such as mobile data, value-added services like mobile financial services (MFS) and video on demand (VOD), and converged service offerings will drive growth at the regional level. That said, customers will remain pricesensitive so the transition to a more data-centric and ......
  • Malawi and Mozambique Telecommunications Report Q4 2016
Published: 28-Sep-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 70
BMI View:The Government of Mozambique plans to merge publicly owned mobile operator mCel with wireline incumbent Telecomunicacoes de Mocambique (TDM). An mCel-TDM merger will reduce operational costs, enabling the enlarged entity to pursue organic subscriber growth in both low-margin rural markets and the niche high-value enterprise segment. We do not, however, expect the merger to lead to a dramatic change in operators' market shares in the ......
  • Singapore Telecommunications Report Q4 2016
Published: 28-Sep-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 72
BMI View: We have not made major forecast revisions to the mobile sector outlook out to 2020. With 3G/ 4G rates nearing 100% penetration and organic subscriber growth prospects low, the market is driven by converged services and the upselling of premium value added services (VAS). The increased competition from the introduction of a fourth carrier will likely hasten ARPU decline over the course of our forecast period. We believe that opportunities are ripe in the Internet......

BMI View: In December 2015, the EC approved the regulator's proposal to open up Telefónica's fibre network in Spain. Although we welcome this development, we maintain our view that the regulator needs to strike a balance between encouraging investment in new technologies and ensuring competitive markets as well as universal coverage. Meanwhile, reports suggest that MásMóvil has overtaken Zegona as the frontrunner to acquire Yoigo from Telia in the Spanish mobile market. M......
  • Ukraine Telecommunications Report Q4 2016
Published: 28-Sep-2016        Price: US 1295 Onwards        Pages: 63
BMI View: We have made some minor downwards revisions for the Ukrainian mobile market to account for the contractions in H1 2016. We are of the opinion that organic subscriber growth in the market will remain elusive out to 2020. Furthermore, the market faces significant headwinds, ranging from a weak currency, low consumer spending ability, market saturation and an uncertain political climate. It is our view that operators hold a significant number of inactive accounts t......
